Families,
I am so excited about the amazing turnout for our I Have a Dream Parade. It is a beautiful thing to see families celebrating all of the dreams and aspirations each of our Sparks have for their futures. Thank you for allowing us to support you and your child in achieving their dreams. With the message Dr. King gave as our inspiration for this event, I wanted to provide you with some ways you can teach your children Dr. King’s dream and about the meaning of MLK Jr. Day and why it is such an important day to celebrate and recognize- not just a day off from school.
For Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 1st Grade- Focus on Fairness
Little kids may not be ready for all the details of civil rights, but they can understand the core message: Every person should be treated the same and with kindness.
Here are some of my favorite books that share Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream:
All Are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold
A Is for Activist by Innosanto Nagara
I Am Martin Luther King, Jr. by Brad Meltzer, illustrated by Christopher Eliopoulos
I am Rosa Parks by Brad Meltzer, illustrated by Christopher Eliopoulos
For 2-4th Grade- Read All About It
Books of every reading level are excellent ways for kids to learn about King’s life and his dream of equality. Find books at the local library or books read aloud on Youtube to watch with your children and discuss.
Some recommendations are:
My Little Golden Book About Martin Luther King Jr. by Bonnie Bader, illustrated by Sue Cornelison
My Dream of Martin Luther King by Faith Ringgold
I Am Martin Luther King, Jr. by Brad Meltzer, illustrated by Christopher Eliopoulos
Martin’s Big Words by Doreen Rappaport
Most importantly, be there to answer any questions your child may have about Dr. King and ways that they can be kind to others and to treat them, as Dr. King dreamed, based on the content of their character and not the color of their skin.
Wishing you all love and kindness,
Mrs. Ybarra
